Beyond Productivity: What Operators Now Demand From AI
Insights from senior operators across industry on AI measurement, readiness, data control, build-versus-buy costs, and shifting customer discovery.

Operators are moving past productivity hype toward hard questions of readiness, real outcome measurement, data control, and build-versus-buy economics.
Senior operators are past the excitement stage and into the hard work of making AI pay off. The strongest theme was measurement: usage is not success, and outcomes matter more than outputs. Several admitted productivity gains are difficult to quantify, and asked how many people are saving how much time. A second theme was readiness. One operator argued firms should clean up data and processes, and be honest about their real maturity, before deploying AI, especially for compliance. Security concerns were concrete: do not send proprietary data to public models, and control employee licensing to curb shadow use. Cost scrutiny is rising, with operators asking whether they could build internal tools that replace what they pay vendors for. Reliability remains unsolved, with generative AI inconsistency named as a live challenge that keeps humans in the loop. Finally, one operator observed AI is already changing top-of-funnel discovery and content, shifting how customers find companies. The recurring admission was candid: everyone is figuring it out as they go. For executives, the message is to resist vanity metrics, invest in governance and data readiness first, treat vendor spend as contestable, and watch AI-driven discovery as a real revenue variable rather than a distant trend.
