Senior operators admit no one has reached a sustainable AI advantage because data foundations, business talent, value metrics, and trust habits all lag the pressure to deploy.

Across industries, senior operators described a consistent gap between AI ambition and readiness. None claimed a sustainable AI advantage. Most are still fixing data quality, system integration, and processes while management pressures them to rush. One warned of an "Instagram effect" where tools are shown at their best and real hiccups stay hidden. A recurring risk is AI being used to fake expertise: a transportation team built a prediction model whose only basis was a chatbot output, with no grasp of the logic. Operators stressed that technical AI talent is plentiful, but business talent that applies AI to real problems is the true bottleneck. On measurement, one operator argued that token usage is the wrong metric and teams should track output and value; value audits exist but are immature and ask the wrong questions. In regulated settings, trust habits are binary, people either accept AI fully or reject it, so QC and skepticism must be built into workflows. Operators also split on cost discipline: one urged matching cheaper models to routine tasks, while another maxes out top models because current costs stay trivial against vendor alternatives. Common threads were governance, contracts adapting to AI, sandbox testing before wider adoption, and the public tension of disclosing AI use without alarming customers about their data. Executives should fix foundations first, measure value not activity, and make human review a default.
