Senior operators report that AI pressure is real, but legacy systems, consumption costs, eroding service value, and fragmented governance are outpacing the strategies and metrics meant to control them.

Operators across finance, entertainment, HR, IT, and translations described a widening gap between pressure to adopt AI and the readiness to control it. Legacy systems built decades ago block real integration, leaving firms stuck doing only surface tasks like email while core data stays locked away. Professional services face a harder threat: clients now self-serve work that used to be billable, putting roughly a third of some offerings under pressure. On cost, an IT sourcing manager warned that consumption-based pricing lets a single user burn tens of thousands of dollars in a day before anyone notices, with vendor governance lagging behind. In regulated sectors, operators build parallel AI governance instead of integrating it into existing risk frameworks, adding burden, while different verticals prohibit specific tools and complicate rollout. Several voiced frustration that companies debate whether to use AI but not how, and that measuring success by token volume rewards waste. Mandates to adopt AI without understanding what teams actually do were cited as dangerous, including a manufacturer that fired engineers for an AI worker and had to rehire them. The through-line: enthusiasm and board pressure are running ahead of the data readiness, cost controls, metrics, and governance needed to make AI pay off. Executives should slow down enough to match AI to real workflows, cap and monitor spend, and measure value rather than activity.
