Who Gets Credit for AI: The Recognition Gap Behind Adoption

Operators see AI adoption spreading, but recognition, representation, and measurement gaps mean the people doing the quiet work rarely get the credit or the room.

This discussion among advisors focused on a quieter side of AI adoption: who does the work and who gets the credit. Advisors observed that much AI use is behind the scenes, handling small tasks rather than visible wins, and that this work often goes unrecognized. They raised a pattern where the people building AI applications are not the ones who receive credit in group settings. To counter this, advisors floated an AI scorecard that rewards both the initiation of an idea and its implementation, so recognition tracks how well AI is actually used, not just whether it is adopted. They also noted that documentation work, such as building reusable templates that feed AI systems, is an unspoken expectation that quietly improves AI readiness while going unrewarded. Meanwhile, the board is pushing for more AI integration, yet few of the people who could advocate new ideas are present in the rooms where decisions happen. A generational divide surfaced too, with more experienced workers described as less comfortable adopting AI than younger colleagues. Taken together, these observations point to a gap between AI enthusiasm at the top and uneven participation and recognition below. Executives who want durable adoption should measure usage quality, credit contributors by name, broaden who sits in planning rooms, and tailor training to different comfort levels. The behavior you reward is the behavior you get.
