AI adoption inside organizations is shaped less by tools than by who gets credit and by uneven, gendered beliefs about whether using AI is legitimate.

This brief captures observations from a single advisory breakout on the human dynamics of AI adoption. Three points stood out, all about people rather than technology. First, recognition for AI projects tends to flow to the person who requested the work, not the person who did it. That misattribution risks demoralizing the skilled practitioners organizations depend on. Second, an operator described a perception gap by gender. Women using AI were seen as incompetent, while men doing the same were seen as pragmatic. Third, women were reported to view AI use as a form of cheating, while men generally did not. Together these suggest that adoption is uneven not because of access but because of belief and social judgment. Left unaddressed, these patterns leave productivity gains unclaimed and push talented contributors toward disengagement. Executives should treat AI adoption as a culture and recognition problem, not only a tooling rollout. Credit the people who build solutions. Set explicit norms that AI is a sanctioned tool for everyone. Audit performance evaluations for bias in how AI use is judged. These findings come from one voice and should be tested against broader data. But they name a real friction that vendors and analysts rarely surface: how perception and fairness quietly govern who actually uses AI at work.
