Hard ROI or Hype: What Separates Operators Who Get Value From AI
Insights from senior operators across healthcare, genomics, and finance on measuring AI value, human oversight, regulation, and the leadership literacy gap.

Operators separate real AI value from hype by pairing hard ROI with mandatory human oversight, while admitting they cannot yet quantify that value.
Senior operators drew a sharp line between AI adopted for image and AI that produces hard, measurable ROI. One genomics team replaced a human sample witness with AI computer vision, cutting resource needs by 25 percent. That kind of specific, labor-linked win is what they trust. Across examples, operators insisted on keeping a human in the loop. They cited a health plan that automated Medicare prior authorizations and laid off clinical reviewers too soon as a cautionary tale of regulatory and clinical risk. The prevailing view is that AI is a reflective technology that surfaces options quickly but leaves final strategic and financial calls to people. A quieter high-value case was document normalization: pairing OCR with language models to reconcile inconsistent legal terminology in banking. Two gaps stood out. First, operators confessed they cannot put a dollar figure on AI value or build a credible business case for leadership. Second, they said leaders need conceptual fluency in how AI tools work, without becoming IT experts. Both point to a maturity gap between enthusiasm and disciplined execution. For executives, the message is practical. Chase narrow, measurable wins. Keep humans deciding until accuracy is proven. Align automation with policy, not just efficiency. And invest in the financial and conceptual literacy that lets leaders justify and steer AI, rather than trusting it or fearing it.
