As firms begin tying promotions and bonuses to AI contribution, operators warn that credit for AI work is being misattributed and adoption is stalling on identity, authenticity, and perception, not tooling.

Senior operators across apparel, services, and other industries described the human and legal frictions of putting AI to work, not the technology itself. A marketing leader at a workwear brand showed how animating still model photos and altering backgrounds outruns existing likeness contracts, while raising internal doubts about whether AI fits a brand built on authentic, hands-on work. Adoption resistance surfaced repeatedly. Staff fear that using AI erodes their own thinking and feels like cheating on hard-won skills. One operator argued the deeper divide is generational, not gender, with younger workers adopting naturally and older ones needing more time. The strongest and most consistent signal came from both breakout groups independently: AI work done by individuals is rolled up and credited to project initiators, erasing contributors and their behind-the-scenes change-management effort. This matters more now that some large firms are reportedly tying rewards, bonuses, and promotions to AI adoption. Operators also voiced concern that women using AI risk being seen as incompetent while men are seen as pragmatic, which discourages people from championing their own AI use. Executives should treat attribution, perception, and authenticity as active adoption risks. Track individual AI contributions, audit talent contracts for AI clauses, tailor training by comfort rather than title, and make AI use visible and credited across the organization so value created is not lost or misassigned.
