AI adoption is being shaped less by tools and more by who gets credit and by gendered beliefs about whether using AI is legitimate.

A short breakout discussion surfaced human dynamics that quietly govern AI adoption. Operators observed that recognition for AI work often flows to the person who requested a project rather than the person who built it. That misattribution risks demotivating the people who do the real work and distorting how talent is judged. The conversation also raised a gendered perception gap. Women using AI were described as being seen as incompetent, while men doing the same were seen as pragmatic. Separately, operators noted that women often regard using AI as a form of cheating, while men generally do not. Together these signals suggest that adoption is shaped by belief and perception, not only by skill or access to tools. Executives who focus only on rolling out technology may miss the social barriers slowing uptake among part of their workforce. The practical response is to make recognition fairer, to state plainly that sanctioned AI use is expected rather than a shortcut, and to watch adoption rates across groups for early signs of hesitation. These findings are drawn from a single brief discussion, so confidence is moderate. Still, they point to a real and often overlooked layer of AI adoption: the workplace norms and perceptions that decide who feels permitted to use these tools and who gets rewarded for doing so.
