Past The Hype: What Operators Cannot Yet Measure, Control, Or Govern In AI
Insights from senior operators across technology, consulting, franchising, and software on AI measurement, cost, review, agent governance, and adoption maturity.

After a year of adoption, senior operators say the hard problems are no longer using AI but measuring its value, controlling its cost, reviewing its output, and governing what agents can touch.
Senior operators across technology, consulting, franchising, hospitality, and software converged on a shared message: the novelty phase is over and the operational problems are now front and center. Teams are building AI agents faster than they can prove value, with one leader relying on biased self-report surveys to estimate time saved. Consumption costs are a live constraint, with budgets shrinking until staff ration usage. Output volume has outrun human review, prompting adversarial setups where one model checks another because self-review is untrusted. Agent permissions create a quieter risk: constant approval prompts breed consent fatigue, so users click OK and expose sensitive data. Several warned the adoption pendulum has swung to overuse, generating low-quality work for tasks people should do themselves. A consultant flagged revenue erosion from both sides, as clients replace her services with AI while she replaces her own vendors, accepting unverified quality to save money. The common thread is a widening gap between how fast organizations can produce AI output and how well they can measure, review, and govern it. Executives should treat measurement, cost forecasting, independent review, and least-privilege agent access as prerequisites, not afterthoughts. The operators most credible were those admitting what they had not yet solved. Their candor points to clear openings for vendors and leaders who can supply objective measurement, predictable cost control, cross-model verification, and access governance that does not depend on tired humans approving prompts.
