The AI Foundation Gap: Why Adoption Is Outrunning Readiness
Insights from senior operators in banking, cybersecurity, marketing, and technology on data readiness, compute costs, verification, and workforce training.

Operators report that AI is being deployed faster than the data foundations, cost models, verification, and training needed to make it trustworthy.
Senior operators across banking, cybersecurity, marketing, and technology described a widening gap between AI adoption and the groundwork that makes it safe. A leader building a bank said teams generate code and make decisions on data tables that are still broken. A cybersecurity leader warned that trusting AI as a source of truth invites confident errors that become the organization's legal problem. A chief customer officer reported the most striking reversal: companies cut staff to save money, then found token costs exceeded salaries, with some reverting to static dashboards because running the model was too expensive. That undercuts the cost-savings story driving many deployments. In marketing, a brand leader said AI flattens work toward a bland middle even as it let him insource jobs and grow his team, raising both brand and talent questions. A search leader observed traffic moving from organic search to LLM answers, forcing new optimization teams. A contractor drew a clear line between empowering employees to use AI and actually training them, warning that mandates without instruction breed anxiety and waste. Across roles, the recurring theme was sequence: firms are buying and mandating AI before fixing data, verifying outputs, modeling real costs, and training people. Executives should treat data readiness, verification, cost modeling, and structured training as prerequisites, not afterthoughts. The operators closest to the work are least convinced the fundamentals are in place.
