Operators across industries agree AI builds trust only when customers feel genuinely helped, and erodes it fast when automation blocks human contact or serves cost cutting over customer outcomes.

Senior operators across banking, legal, healthcare, construction, nonprofits, and software converged on a simple test for AI in customer experience: does the customer feel helped or handled. AI earns trust when it speeds responses, reduces effort, and frees people for complex work. It erodes trust when it blocks access to a human, gives generic answers, or is used mainly to cut costs. A frustrating retirement account chatbot became the group's cautionary example. Operators also warned that customers now start from distrust when they suspect content is AI-generated, so quality and disclosure matter. A notable gap emerged between leaders, who personally prefer human interaction, and younger customers comfortable with digital-first service. Designing for executive preference risks missing the actual market. Relationship-driven businesses like construction found AI useful behind the scenes but weak at the point of customer contact. Legal and healthcare operators flagged real exposure from upcoming state AI regulation, liability, and health privacy rules, often ahead of their controls. The shared principle: use AI to handle the mundane and free humans to solve the hard problems, while always leaving an easy path to a person. Executives should measure trust and customer effort, not just deflection rates and cost savings, and should build channel strategy around customer preference rather than their own instincts.
