One energy project manager shows AI delivering measurable margin gains through faster decision cadence, yet adoption stalls below 5 percent on security, missing governance, and looming cost questions.

A senior project manager overseeing a large capital portfolio in energy construction offers a grounded view of AI in practice. He reports a concrete win: moving project financial tracking from monthly to daily tightened forecast variance from 8 to 10 percent down to 3 to 4 percent, recapturing margin by catching opportunities before they expire. His core use case is bridging fragmented, incompatible systems across many partner organizations, translating data between them without forcing standardization he believes is impossible. Yet despite these results, fewer than 5 percent of his team uses AI weekly, and he rates governance at zero. The binding constraints are security vetting inside a large conglomerate and simple lack of exposure. He distinguishes corporate security layers, the last line of defense, from active governance SOPs that do not yet exist. Looking ahead, he names two concerns rarely voiced at this stage. First, token cost: at what point does compute exceed the cost of a person doing the work. Second, sustainability at scale, including a psychology risk that staff stop training and chasing certifications because they default to AI. His consistent frame is that AI should supplement people, not replace them, freeing experts for judgment-heavy work like negotiation. He wants published cost-benefit and human-impact studies that do not yet exist.
